The NWS tweeted on social media platforms that these types of clouds commonly form when the temperature of the water in the clouds drops below 0 degrees Celsius but the water does not freeze.
The NWS said these holes in clouds are possible because they are caused by some aircraft movement. When an airplane passes through a cloud, the air around its body and wings expands or cools and eventually turns into tiny crystals that form water droplets.
These frozen droplets are heavier and do not allow the holes formed in the clouds to close, and due to their heavy weight, they fall into these holes.
