Researchers divide the people into three different categories. The first group is made up of those people who never smoked; the second group is made up of those who are currently smokers; and the third group is made up of those people who left smoking at a different age.

According to the research results, people who smoke regularly at the age of 35, 45, 55, 65, and 75 and are still smoking have lost years of their lives accordingly (9.1, 8.3, 7.3, 5.9, 4.4) as compared to those who never smoke.

The people who left smoking at the age of 35, 45, 55, 65, and 75 have seen the expected increase in age of 8, 5.6, 3.4, 1.7, and 0.7 as compared to the people who continue smoking.

This research includes 1.5 million people from 4 countries; these people belong to the UK, US, Canada, and Norway.
